Organic Deep-Root Fertilization: Why It Matters

Fertilizing your trees and shrubs is something almost everyone knows that they need to do. But not too many of the average property owners know that deep-root feedings are just as important, if not even more important. It can be easy to get caught up with the pandemic going on and New York being one of the states very much affected by it. But with the time that is now being spent at home, it gives you a moment to relax and learn a little more about your greenery and its needs.

What is Deep-Root Fertilization?

Deep-root fertilization and feedings are essentially just the same as regular fertilization but done in a much more efficient manner. With deep-root feedings, the injections are about eight to twelve inches beneath the surface of a tree’s soil. It is applied in a pattern that replicates a grid to ensure each part of the tree is receiving the nutrients it needs.

At Griffin Organics, we try to make everything we do a bit more eco-friendly by ensuring that the majority of our ingredients natural and non-toxic. For deep-root feedings, in particular, we use a compost tea fertilizer the inject beneath the greenery. Making compost tea is a gardener’s art, it isn’t easy or simple, but for the health and wellness of our client’s trees and shrubs, we know it is well worth the work.

When Should You Deep-Root Fertilize?

If you notice that your the soil your trees and shrubs are growing in is especially compact, or that it is beginning to produce a build-up of thatch, deep-root feedings might be necessary for the near future. These two issues can and usually do arise after a long warm-season has come and gone. Excessive turf use can cause compacted soil and fall debris build-up can cause thatch to begin forming.
