It is applied in a pattern that replicates a grid to ensure each part of the tree is receiving the nutrients it needs.

When Should You Deep-Root Fertilize?
If you notice that your the soil your trees and shrubs are growing in is especially compact, or that it is beginning to produce a build-up of thatch, deep-root feedings might be necessary for the near future. These two issues can and usually do arise after a long warm-season has come and gone. Excessive turf use can cause compacted soil and fall debris build-up can cause thatch to begin forming.
